PIKE ROAD, Ala. (AP) — The Montgomery County sheriff said a fleeing robbery suspect exchanged gunfire with a witness who had chased him from the scene. The sheriff told news outlets that the incident was captured on video.

Montgomery County Sheriff Derrick Cunningham told reporters during a Wednesday news conference that a 16-year-old suspect was arrested Tuesday night when he went to the emergency room in a neighboring county for a gunshot wound. The teen's name was not released because of his age.

The robbery occurred Tuesday afternoon at the Dollar General store on Pike Road. Cunningham said the suspect fled on foot but was confronted by a witness in a pickup truck who followed him. He said the 16-year-old shot several times at the driver, and the driver returned fire.

Video captured by a bystander showed a man running through a field and jumping over a fence in the suburban neighborhood while being pursued by the truck. Sporadic gunfire could be heard.

Cunningham played a portion of the video during a news conference Wednesday. A lengthier version was posted on social media.

The sheriff praised both the man who chased the suspect and the person who filmed the incident. Asked about the actions of the witness, Cunningham said the witness was “doing everything the safe way, but this person did not want witnesses."

“I'm just so thankful that the witness was able to do what he had to do to protect himself," the sheriff said.

He said the robbery suspect will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

“If you think you can get out in the community and you fire off rounds like that— like we’re in a war zone — we’re going to come get you and we’re going to put you away,” the sheriff said.
